A Jewish story for you:
A woman asks her rabbi, “Why does God write the law on our hearts? Why not in our hearts? It’s the inside of my heart that needs God.”
The rabbi answered, “God never forces anything into a human heart. He writes the word on our hearts so that when our hearts break, God falls in.”
May God’s presence fill the nooks, cracks, crannies and broken bits of your heart.
These days my heart is broken for the children, women and men who are facing domestic violence. Leaving — even just for an hour to go to school, work, library, mall, a friend’s house — is even more more difficult during this season of social isolation. Pets are also suffering in homes heavy with abuse, violence, pain, addictions.
I don’t know how you’re doing at home, but I am holding you up in prayer.
A young reader alerted me to this problem. Here’s his comment:
“You gave words of wisdom for adults whose parents try to control them,” says Ruben on 7 Tips for Dealing With Controlling Parents. “What about a 10 year old kid who can’t leave a home with abusive parents? How can a child put into practice all your nice tips if their mom or dad uses physical and mental abuse? Sorry but the Internet is full of tips and tricks on how to do this and that but this is not gonna work with abused children. Thanks anyway.”
I wrote The Best Ways to Survive Abuse When You Can’t Leave Home for kids and teens.
For women who are financially dependent and feeling trapped in unhappy or abusive marriages, I wrote How Do You Leave When You Have Nowhere to Go?

This, too, shall pass.
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
will clap their hands.Isaiah 55:12
Take good care of yourself, for you are a child of God. And that means you’re worth taking good care of.
